Women Applying Foundation On Her Face

How Should You Apply Your Foundation?

As a makeup lover, you've likely explored many types of foundations to find the perfect color and texture. What could make the perfect foundation even better? It's simple - the best tools and techniques for application can always take your look to the next level. Here are a few ways to apply your foundation that might perfect your complexion even more.

A Foundation Sponge

The light and flexible touch of a sponge makes it a popular tool for applying foundation, and one of our favorites - the Beauty Blender - is no exception. It can be used with liquid or powder foundation for a finish that looks airbrushed. The sponge’s soft texture and egg shape contribute to creating a natural finish as you apply your foundation.

Simply dip this sponge in your foundation, or dampen it first for lighter coverage. Then tap the sponge on your skin to apply the foundation, enjoying how its flexibility and rounded surface allows you to reach each area for full coverage. The sensation and motion of using a sponge is similar to that of using your fingers, but your fingers stay clean and nothing transfers from your fingers to your face.

A Flat Foundation Brush

You’ve got the liquid, now get a polished look. The appearance of a fresh, smooth complexion develops beautifully as you apply your liquid foundation with a flat foundation brush. It’s the preferred tool for many professional makeup artists and amateurs alike and works with many different liquid foundation textures.

The flatness of the brush allows you to pick up just a bit of foundation and smooth it over large swaths of skin for quick and even coverage. Apply the foundation with one side of the brush, and then turn it over to smooth and soften your application to get the desired finish.

A Full Powder Brush

Powder and mineral foundations respond well to a makeup brush known as a "kabuki brush," which has a tapered, round brush head and short handle. Sweep the brush in your foundation to pick up the powder, tap off any excess, and buff it over your skin to distribute color and get coverage. The compact handle makes it easy to make short, broad strokes. Use the edge of the brush to reach smaller areas, including the sides of your nose, eyes and mouth.

After applying a base layer with one of these foundation-perfecting tools, you can revisit any visible flaws using the same method over the smaller area. Choose the best application tool and technique for your foundation's texture, apply it with care, and voila! The end result is stunning skin and a perfect base for the rest of your makeup.
